Packing a Carry On: The Ultimate Guide

Now that you know how to organize your carry-on to ensure you never forget something, let’s talk about actually packing a carry on!

When I’m on a long-haul flight my items are a bit more elaborate than a short trip, so of course modify my recommendations below based on factors like that.

Packing a Carry On: The Ultimate Guide

Carry on Skincare, Cosmetics, Liquids

LIP TREATMENTStinted chapstick, Aquaphor (I never go anywhere without this), lipstick, etc.

HAND CREAM — to avoid dry hands! Click here to see the latest prices. I LOVE that one - it even has SPF in it.

EYE CREAM — especially on a long-haul flight. Under eyes are sensitive and need moisture! I keep an oil stick in my Truffle Clarity Clutch at all times. It works great for under eyes PLUS anywhere else you might need some extra nourishment. Click here to see the one I LOVE!

FACIAL SPRAY — again for hydration. Missha’s essence mist is the best because it contains fermented yeast extract which delivers vitamins, amino acids, and minerals to actually refresh, renew, and rejuvenate skin! Click here to see the latest prices.

FACE MASK — especially on a long-haul flight. My recommendation is Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask because the container is perfect for travel, it’s ultra-nourishing, and doesn’t look crazy on. You can even apply it before heading to the airport under your makeup if you must travel with makeup on! Click here to see the latest price.

DID YOU KNOW: when you buy the products we recommend through the links on our blog posts, it helps keep our site running at no additional cost to you. We really appreciate your support!

Other Carry On Essentials

REUSABLE WATER BOTTLE — to fill up before your flight. Hydro Flask is the best and worth the investment. Click here to see the latest prices.

CASHMERE WRAP OR SCARF — I always bring a cashmere scarf or wrap on all trips because I consider it an absolute essential. I actually carry one in my purse at all times. You never know when you’ll need an extra layer on a cold plane, train, or something else. Click here for a great option!

SUNGLASSES — for once you hop off the flight! Three timeless styles I’ve been wearing non-stop: click here for my favorite Quay aviators (I have numerous pairs), click here for my round Ray-Bans, and click here for my all time favorite black on black Ray-Bans that are often hard to track down because they sell out consistently.

SNACKS — bars (I like LarabarRXBAR and Quest), nuts (I like raw cashews or almonds), popcorn (SkinnyPop or Smartfood), GG crackers (fiber!), Liquid IV, probiotic (ok not a snack but important still).

To Survive a Long-Haul Flight

NECK PILLOW — I prefer one that you blow up because it takes up way less space. Click here to see a good option.

EAR PLUGS — if you are sensitive to sound. I’m not but I still carry them in my TRUFFLE clutch just in case (I’m a Virgo, gotta be prepared!). Click here to see the latest prices.

ADVIL — both regular and PM so I can knock myself out on overnight flights ;) Click here for regular and here for PM.

LAVENDER OIL — not absolutely necessary, but I travel with a rollerball of lavender oil to help me sleep and because it’s calming and doesn’t take up much space so why not?! Click here for the lavender oil I use.

SILK SLEEP MASK — to block out the light! I use this one on the plane and in the hotel especially if I am traveling with someone who wants to stay up later than I do. Silk is anti-aging and great for your skin which is why it must be silk! Click here for a less expensive option if needed.

Cleansing and Refreshing Essentials

HAND SANITIZERclick here for my favorite plant-based and all natural one.

SANITIZING WIPE — to wipe your seat and keep yourself/everything clean. Click here for the essential oil cleansing towelettes I recommend.

CLEANSING CLOTHS — for long travel days. Click here for a good option.

DEODORANT click here for the one I use.

MINTS OR GUM

TOOTHBRUSH — like Colgate Wisps to use once you land. DO NOT use the water in the bathroom on the plane! Click here for the Colgate Wisps.

TRAVEL PERFUME — I always pick the free perfumes samples when making a purchase on Sephora online so I can throw one in my TRUFFLE clutch! Click here to see the travel perfume options.

CHARGERS — including an external one! Click here for an external charger. I always bring extra chords too just in case. Click here for that!

ADAPTERS — I recommend a universal one that will work no matter where you’re going. Click here for the one I use. When going to the EU I also bring along an inexpensive 6 pack so that I have extras. So much to charge these days! Click here for those.

CARDIGAN — Barefoot Dreams’ circle cardigan is honestly one of the best travel-related purchase I have made. So warm and absolutely necessary, I’ve brought mine on every single trip since purchasing it. I wear it on every flight plus it’s great for transit days, hotel lounging, and wearing out! Click here to see the latest prices.

CASHMERE WRAP — I bring a black pashmina wrap with me everywhere I go. It literally lives in my purse 24/7 and is especially handy for plane rides since they get very cold and often uncomfortable :) You can use it as a wrap, a scarf, or even a blanket! J. Crew’s is a best seller. Click here to see the latest prices.

COMPRESSION SOCKS — if you need ‘em. Otherwise just regular old no-show socks. Click here for the ones I like.
